“Snow in Oslo,” a collaborative painting by Irina Sanina and Ajay Goyal, unveils the mystical winter enchantment of contemporary Oslo. Within this snowscape, the city is embraced by a fresh blanket of snow, accompanied by ominous clouds that foretell the promise of more snowfall to come.
This impressionist canvas pays homage to Gustave Courbet’s pioneering snowscapes, which sparked a wave of imitations among fellow impressionist painters. Courbet’s skillful realism in depicting snowscapes ignited a creative flame that gave birth to masterpieces by artists like Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley. Notable works such as “Snow at Argenteuil,” “Hoarfrost,” and “Snow at Louveciennes” followed in the wake of his innovation.
The artwork masterfully captures Oslo’s winter symphony, presenting a true impressionist ode to the season.
The painting seems to bring Claude Monet’s arduous 1895 journey to Norway full circle. His Norway expedition was perhaps his most physically demanding due to the extreme cold temperatures. Monet was captivated by the snowy landscapes of Norway and accompanied by his stepson Jacques Hoschedé, he created 29 Norwegian scenes during his determined two-month stay. Among these scenes, the village of Sandvika near Christiania (now Oslo) emerged as a cherished motif, as evidenced by at least six captivating works.
